VisTrails is an open source, free and multiplatform graphical software written in the Python programming language around the Qt toolkit, and designed to act as a scientific workflow management system. Developed at the University of Utah, the software has been engineered in such a way that is can address the needs of exploratory scientific apps. It is very extendable through plugins. Key features include support for data visualization and exploration, a visual programming interface for several libraries, including VTK (The Visualization Toolkit), the ability to generate mashups, a provenance viewer, as well as support for global variables, a very useful function for Constant derived modules, which can be used to create shared variables.
